In our early days with the Ascent, this roadrunner's constant "beep beep" when it saw a car, lost a car it was tracking, started creeping out of the lane, or detected anything ominous seemed more distracting than helpful. Colleague Frank Markus was first to dig into the settings—the menu item for beep alerts is under Sounds— to turn off the warning beeps lest he go mad during a long road trip. After logging nearly miles in its first two months of service, our long-term Subaru Ascent 's pace slowed over the winter months as fewer staffers ventured far from home. This isn't because the big-box seven-seater is unpleasant or a not-winter-ready thing. Our low usage was more a reflection of current market trends, as our fleet is flush with family haulers: Right now, we have seven utility vehicles, two station wagons, two pickups, and a van all vying for the attention of staff members planning a long journey. Still, our Subaru Ascent Touring continues to satisfy its mission, transporting humans, dogs, and all of their belongings without significant drama. Since our getting-acquainted period, the frequency of comments in the logbook has trailed off.
Subaru has spent decades convincing shoppers that they not only want all-wheel drive, plastic body cladding, and extra ground clearance but that they need these features, too. The company wants you to believe that you need a Subaru. Three-row SUVs play a similar game. A minivan may have the space and practicality that families need, but who wants to be seen in one of those? Minivan surrogates such as the new Subaru Ascent ostensibly package much but not all of that versatility into a considerably more desirable shell. Having learned from its misadventure with the forgotten Tribeca —an SUV with an optional third row of seats sold from to that was too small, too expensive, and too weird-looking to succeed—Subaru is serious this time.
