Approximately 2, women and men experiencing homelessness have received emergency shelter and supportive services to help them move beyond homelessness each year. The facility grew from being 8, square feet and 96 beds to beds and 42, square feet. It is equipped to provide expanded emergency shelter beds ; expanded transitional housing for Veterans 19 rooms ; and Section 8 Project-Based Voucher efficiency apartments 38 rooms. Along with expanded housing capacity, CISS also provides an on-site health clinic, food pantry, clothing closet, classrooms, and a foot growing dome. Programming continues to evolve to meet emerging homeless and community needs. In the early s, five men died on the streets of Des Moines. They were intoxicated and denied stay at other shelters in the area at the time.
A Des Moines homeless shelter has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit that alleged a bed bug infestation made the shelter uninhabitable in late and The exact amount of money awarded to claimants will depend on the length of their stay, according to the settlement agreement. The new facility provides emergency shelter for male and 50 female clients, 38 individual Section Eight apartments and 19 Grant-Per-Diem individual apartments for Veterans.
