The small four-stroke engines on walk-behind lawnmowers are internally lubricated by motor oil. Lawnmower engines, like automobile engines, need to have their oil changed periodically to maintain peak performance and ensure long engine life. Regular oil changes are more critical for small lawnmower engines because most have no oil filters to screen out engine contaminants. In general, small engines require less than a quart of oil to fill their crankcase. Most small engine makers recommend changing oil at the start of the mowing season or after every 20 to 50 hours of operation. The recommended interval varies by manufacturer.
