By andywadsworth , March 17, in Motorcycles in Thailand. I have an old kick start Honda Phantom which has eventually knackered my knee so I can no longer start with my right leg. Is it possible to have an electric start fitted? My Thai mechanic says it's not possible, he is probably correct but I would like another informed opinion. Sounds cheap at the least he will need a relay, fuse, wire and plugs, start switch, starter and the proper case do engage the starter. Just get a new or second hand bike with an electric start and save yourself the trouble, trust me.
There is nothing more frustrating than your motorcycle refusing to start just when you thought you wanted to go for a beautiful ride., RE bullet Electra is equipped with Kick with Self-start feature. The Royal Enfield Classic and Royal Enfield Bullet follows the familiar design lines of the timeless Royal Enfield Bullet silhouette — a design and shape that has been a familiar British classic design of the pre-War and post-War era.
Q. Is Self start available in bullet standard 350?
Yes it's possible for a standard model to be installed with a self-starter externally but the charges can skyrocket if you buy components from a retailer, as high as 40k! The clutch chamber self starter self pinions and switch gear needs to be changed for later models and previous models the crank stud needs to be changed additional. The cost wold be around 10k. Its Standard variant comes with Kick Start only. On the other hand, its Electra variant is equipped with both Kick and Self Start. I would suggest you to get the self start fitted from a reputed and trusted workshop otherwise you can face problems in future.
A few months ago, I was dirt biking with a group of friends when one of their starters failed, causing a huge debate when we were driving back home about what was better: an electric start or kick start. After some heavy research, I have finally made my decision about which starter is the best to have on your dirt bike. Although the electric start is convenient, a kick start almost never fails and requires less maintenance.
Electric start vs. Kick start?
Kick start is a method of starting an internal combustion engine usually that of a motorcycle by pushing a ratcheting lever with one's foot. Kick start mechanisms were almost universally a part of motorcycle engines before the mids, and were phased out of production over the next twenty years or so as electric starters became standard equipment. There are still some motorcycles produced that have both kick and electric starters. Many mopeds and scooters also carry both a kick start and an electric start, the former being useful in case the latter fails, as scooter and moped batteries tend to be smaller and, as a result, run down much faster than other forms of automotive batteries. Also, it is usually not possible to push start a moped or scooter with automatic transmission. Larger motorcycles featured a manual compression release mechanism that made starting easier while modern units did this automatically through a cable attached to the kick start lever. Today, dedicated off-road motorcycles and many ATVs use kick start systems, due to the increased weight of electric starters.
