Having marked nearly 30 years as a professional musician, Barry Bales is one of the most in-demand bassists in acoustic music. Drummer Jay Bellerose grew up the last of eight children near Portland, Maine. Inspired in equal measure by old TV clips of Gene Krupa and Lawrence Welk drummer Paul Humphries, Bellerose developed an approach to drumming that is as much informed by texture and melody as by groove. While a student at The Berklee School of Music in Boston, Bellerose had his drum kit stolen, and it is hard to over-estimate the significance of the event on his future artistry: working from a hodge-podge of drums donated by friends, Jay began to discover new sonic possibilities by assembling mismatched kit configurations that varied from song to song, setting battered marching drums and bits of arcane, vaudeville-era hand percussion devices along side more conventional modern drums. The ever-changing results revealed a signature sensibility that finds Jay compared to impressionist painters as often as to drum luminaries like Sonny Greer and Al Gavin. They derive their sounds from combining country, bluegrass, and gospel styles and are renowned for their vocal harmonies.

In her work, Krauss has managed to consistently locate the fertile common ground between traditional modes and topical themes. The process that led to Paper Airplane had its own particular set of circumstances, at one point bringing the sessions to a dead stop when, for just the second time in her life, Krauss was hammered by a bout of migraine headaches. When she called him, Castleman lamented that he was in a dry spell and feeling uninspired, but he asked her to come over and sit with him and tell him about what was going on in her life. When Krauss walked in the door, he told her he had a melody.
