The Center is located in the Phoenix metropolitan area, a vibrant, rapidly growing urban community of the American Southwest. The CePoD affiliates represent a broad range of disciplines and professional backgrounds, conceptual and methodological approaches, and geographic foci. CePoD promotes scholarly collaborative research and training in demography at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The Center brings together faculty and students from diverse academic backgrounds including Sociology, Family and Human Development, and Geography. Among a number of innovative cross-cutting approaches to population dynamics that CePoD promotes, two are of particular import—the environmental perspective and the social network perspective. In prioritizing the environment and social networks, CePoD seeks to best leverage the unique expertise that ASU units and researchers across the University have established in both fields. The Center is dedicated to providing faculty and students with research support in a collegial and collaborative intellectual environment.

The aim of the ASPIRE study is to identify the affective and neurocognitive characteristics of adolescent social relationships that impact academic success and wellbeing. We assess the impact of family, peer, and romantic relationships on academic engagement. This is important because social relationships can help teens navigate the path to school and career success, but they can also pose challenges, and at times, hinder engagement in school. We partnered with two local high schools and collected data from 99 dating adolescent couples.
