Hi everyone -- we are planning to fly into Sacramento third week of August, 5 nights, family with 2 teenagers. First time to Northern CA area, so it is all new and special to us. Any help in planning is greatly appreciated. Some specific questions No not enough time to do both parks. I'd suggest Yosemite , where the scenery is unique, whereas you can see redwoods in places other than Redwood NP. Yosemite books up really fast, so check lodging availability now.
I will be traveling from Redwood National Park to Sacramento. They both seem to be about the same distance. Is one of them more scenic? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. There are differences of opinion about this. I don't find Hwy 20 very scenic at all but Hwy from Eureka to Leggett is quite nice with lots of redwoods and the Avenue of the Giants. Hwy from Arcata is pretty scenic as it follows the Trinity River and then descends into Redding.
Redwood National and State Parks is the last refuge of the ancient and once-expansive coast redwood ecosystem. Although only about 4 percent of the original old-growth forest remains, the four-park area is varied and vast. In addition to the tallest trees in the world, the ecosystem is home to black bears, elk and rare birds. The parks are open all year and entry is free. Your main considerations are where to stay, what to pack, what to do in the park and how to leave a minimal impact on the environment.

I am heading up a group of 10 driving from Alberta, Canada down to Disneyland the last 2 weeks of August. On the way down we will be spending 2 nights in Crescent City and then driving to Sacramento. I realize it isn't a lot of time but it is all we have since the main focus of our trip will be Disney and area. The night before we head to Crescent City we are staying in Portland. Our plan is to drive out to the coast and down. What are the main things to see in the Crescent City area, given the limited time, and where is the best place to stop for a picnic on the way to Sacramento? We plan on taking highway most of the way to enjoy the scenery.

Hi, I know some of you from the Road Trip forum, where I've gotten great advice. We have decided to add a drive through the Redwood National Park area on to the front end of our trip, which starts Saturday from Sacramento. We have two nights to spend between Sacramento and our next stop, near Salem, Oregon. It looks like the most direct route is 5 to 20 to I'm having a very hard time figuring out where to spend our nights. Normally we would camp but there is a major heatwave in the works for this weekend.
