With such a variety of areas to explore in this beautiful country, you may be thinking, how can I possible choose just one? My not try the Bay of Islands? With so many different options for towns to visit and explore, there are many hidden treasures waiting to be explored. This post will explore the best route to take to the Bay of Islands from central Auckland with links to different itineraries based on your chosen destination. Note: For our overseas visitors, be sure to take your time when driving in NZ. Our roads are often narrow and windy so it can be more tiring for the driver to drive three hours in NZ than it would be to drive three hours somewhere where the highways are long and wide.
We are picking our car up from Auckland airport at 6pm in November. Rather than staying overnight in Auckland , we would like to stay somewhere nice before we drive to Paihia the next day. Please suggest a pretty town to wake up in the morning on the East coast between Auckland and Paihia. By the time you gain your bearings to head north and drive through commuter traffic heading home, the Hibiscus Coast Orewa - Waiwera which both are around 1. This is a lovely coastal area of the North Island , with a good range of accommodation and facilities.
Plan so far is to fly to Auckland and hire a car. Then thought 3 nights tn Paihai, doing day trips to Russell and maybe Cape Reinga etc. What route should be take back to Auckland? If you travel up on the east coast then definitely try to return via the west--SH Then you will get to see Hokianga harbour, theWaiapoua forest with the giant Kauri trees and the Kauri museum at Matakohe. Stay in either Russell or Paihia these are connected by a passenger ferry and a car ferry, both of which run very regularly all day.

Long Bay Regional Park located close to Browns Bay is a great place to soak up some fresh coastal air and have a stroll on the cliff top walk. The bay itself is great for kayaking and paddle boarding so if that floats your boat, give it a whirl.
The Bay of Islands combines Russell's heritage charm with boat cruises and marine adventures leaving from busy Paihia, and further north the attractions become even more remote and spectacular, leading all the way to the very top of the North Island at Cape Reinga. Mangawhai village lies on a horseshoe-shaped harbour, but it's Mangawhai Heads, 5 kilometres further on, that's really special. A narrow sandspit stretches for kilometres to form the harbour's south head, sheltering a seabird sanctuary. There's an excellent surf beach, best viewed while traversing the Mangawhai Cliff Top Walkway. Starting at Mangawhai Heads, this walking track around two to three hours offers extensive views of the ocean and the coast.
