Pitted keratolysis is a bacterial skin infection that can affect both the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands. However, it most often affects the feet because of the sweaty environment created by wearing shoes and socks for an extended period of time. This condition is characterized by small depressions or pits in the top layer of skin and areas of white skin. It can be a cause of smelly feet and is much more common in men than women. The most common symptom of pitted keratolysis is a noticeable odor from the feet, due to the infection of the skin on the bottom of the feet.

Ingrown nails, the most common toenail problem, occur when the nail borders curve into the soft tissue of nail grooves. Ingrown nails cause pressure and pain along the nail borders. The edge of the nail may cut into the skin, causing redness, swelling, pain, drainage and infection. Following the preventative steps above can help you avoid the need for treatment. To relieve discomfort from ingrown toenails, soak your foot in a solution of lukewarm water and salt or lukewarm soapy water. Then apply an antiseptic and bandage the area. If self-care measures are unsuccessful or if you have a nail infection, you may need a doctor's care.

The most common locations for pitted keratolysis include: Pressure-bearing sites on the soles of the feet, especially the heels Non-pressure-bearing sites on the soles of the feet Palms of the hands In these areas, the condition appears as white patches studded with small 0. These pits can sometimes join together coalesce to form larger, crater-like lesions.

Pitted keratolysis also known as Keratolysis plantare sulcatum, [1] Keratoma plantare sulcatum, [1] and Ringed keratolysis [1] is a bacterial skin infection of the foot. The infection is caused by Corynebacterium species bacteria and sometimes Kytococcus sedentarius. Skin biopsy specimens are not usually utilized, as the diagnosis of pitted keratolysis is often made by visual examination and recognition of the characteristic odor. Wood's lamp examination results are inconsistent. Treatment of pitted keratolysis requires the application of antibiotics to the skin such as benzoyl peroxide , clindamycin , erythromycin , fusidic acid , or mupirocin. Pitted keratolysis typically presents with white discoloration of the skin and numerous discrete, "punched-out" pitted lesions or erosions, usually located on the soles of the feet.
