Just the Way You Are

You almost expect to hear ice clinking in the glasses of the invisible audience. However, the Nelson charm does certainly show itself throughout the album, making up for any shortcomings that might have weighed down a lesser artist. Hearing someone who is 85 reminisce about when they were 17 and 21 is more striking than hearing someone who is, say, in their 40s singing about when they were 17 and 21 when it sounds as if they are just having a mild mid-life crisis. A middle-aged singer might just sound as if they are missing the youth they just recently lost, while Nelson sounds like someone who knows—from decades of experience—that being young at heart is important for a long, healthy life. big time rush nothing even matters

Since blockbuster Stardust , Willie Nelson has maintained a consistent diligence to recording standards and tribute LPs, most at least worthwhile if not revelatory. Taking on Frank Sinatra with his latest homage platter, Nelson, 85, rightly doesn't try matching the velvet richness of "The Voice," but instead finds his own unique inroads to a well-trodden catalog. The country sovereign's immaculate phrasing, sincere handling of the songbook, and experienced vocal feel on the material find enough spectacular moments worth revisiting. Nelson works through "My Way" with an understated tenderness, the years on his voice seeping into the song like distinctly familiar but unplaceable aroma, and emerges triumphant without the overwrought bravado. Ever since 's Stardust , standards albums have been part of Willie Nelson 's arsenal, but 's My Way presents a twist on this shopworn tradition: it's designed as a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Album-long tributes to Sinatra aren't uncommon -- Bob Dylan devoted much of the s to recording a series of tributes to him -- but My Way stands apart from the pack by capturing both the rakish charm of the Chairman of the Board and Nelson 's sly elegance. This is light and breezy, music that suggests the swinging heyday of Sinatra without ever quite sounding like a dusty old Capitol LP, not even the horns are sighing and blaring. Chalk that up to Nelson , who sounds limber if a bit scraggly, both in his voice and on his guitar. There's a wry, insouciant charm to his performances: he knows how to ratchet up the drama in "It Was Very Good Year," realizes "My Way" is irresistible hokum, and slides into the calming melody of "Summer Wind.
