When your blood is flowing, your skin is glowing, and you feel like you can take on the world? Because in order to experience that endorphin euphoria sans exercise, you'll have to immerse yourself in a freezing-cold shower or bath for a few minutes every day. I'm always on the hunt for productivity hacks, so I was intrigued when I heard about the potential benefits of taking cold showers on one of my favorite podcasts. Proponents of "cold therapy" say that cold showers are a free way boost your immune system, energy, and productivity. Improving any one of those metrics, much less all of them at once, would obviously help with one's overall life satisfaction.

I wanted to do it because it was challenging and tough for me to do. I wanted to use it to help me cultivate better self-discipline. After doing it for a week or two though, I found the mental resistance diminishes.

The 30 day cold shower challenge has become of the most popular challenges of the summer and since there are quite a few benefits related to this challenge I too decided to take the plunge. The cold water challenge tells you to take a cold shower every day for a month. Taking a shower every day also means waisting a lot of water, instead take a shower every other day. This will again prevent waisting water. The first couple of times my hart was racing but I just tried to take a deep breath. I have a huge issue with waisting water so this was definitely something important for me. Taking cold showers in the morning made me feel invincible and ready to take on the day.

This Challenge is exactly what you think it is: you take a cold shower every single day for 30 days. Intrigued, I started reading the accounts of people taking the challenge, and soon realized that they were overwhelmingly positive. I hate cold showers!!! I told the little voice to shut up, gathered all my courage, and stepped in. Holy shit. The little voice was right!

I talk a lot about cold showers around here. Experiment participants who participated in six weeks of immersions benefited from an increase in plasma concentration, as well as T helper cells and lymphocytes. It has been shown that these babies end up more resistant to disease and that they sleep deeper and more soundly. They do this year-round for children between the ages of two and six. Again, this is in Siberia. These kids are tough.

I Took A Freezing-Cold Shower Every Morning For A Month & This Is What Happened

Every time you exert your willpower — making a decision, handling a crisis, or avoiding a temptation — you are drawing on limited reserves. Studies have shown that if you find yourself exerting extra willpower, you have a greater chance of giving up on something else later in the day. Baumeister created an experiment where participants were brought into a room with 2 plates, a plate of cookies and a plate of radishes. Some participants were asked to eat the cookies, and some to eat the radishes. The ones who ate the radishes, and had to exert self-control to keep from eating the cookies, gave up an average of 8 minutes later. The cookie-eaters persevered much longer, for an average of 19 minutes. Using your willpower to make a decision, the Ego Depletion theory goes, reduces your reserves of willpower.

  1. From that day on I started ending my warm shower with 15–30 seconds to cold water only. Whenever I would turn on the cold water I would say.
