This is the first part of a multi-part posts. North Korea has been getting a lot of attention recently and all for the wrong reasons. I decided to compile together a collection of North Korean pictures and documentaries to get a better view inside of the hermit Kingdom. Some of it is funny, sad, disturbing and weird. This post has a lot of parts. I have included his North Korea trip and the labor camps in Siberia videos. Part 1 Vice founder Shane Smith managed to get into North Korea after a year and half of trying and is witness to the craziness of this hermit nation.

Founder of VICE Shane Smith spends an eternity on a train and hops out at the end of the line in Siberia to investigate logging camps that use North Korean slave labor. While on his way to uncover labor camps setup by Kim Jong Il and North Korea as a way to bring in hard currency for their impoverished nation, Shane Smith gets re-accustomed with how to handle Russian alcoholics aboard the trans-Siberian railway. After sidestepping the authorities and boarding a single carriage train to the middle of nowhere Shane arrives at a Nortth Korean labor camp. Accompanied by the former chief of police Shane and Simon break into a disbanded North Korean labor camp to explore the propaganda and the "Laboratory of Kim Jong Il". On their way out with their arms full of "memorabilia" Shane and Simon fear that they've been caught but end up being introduced to a real North Korean labor worker by two Russian scrap metal dealers. Shane and Simon head off to Tataul and link up with a member of the local mafia known as "The Fish".

He is known for his coverage of the crisis in Ukraine for VICE News and for Selfie Soldiers , a documentary in which he re-enacted a Russian soldier's social media posts to track him to Ukraine. He is also a recipient of the Alfred I. Ostrovsky started his career in documentary filmmaking in after spending six years as a print reporter in Russia, where he covered Russia for The Moscow Times and then Georgia , Armenia and Azerbaijan for the French news agency Agence France-Presse. In , Ostrovsky produced an exclusive report for BBC Newsnight investigating government-sponsored child labor in the cotton industry of Uzbekistan , [3] which a US embassy cable published by Wikileaks credited with reigniting the global campaign against Uzbek cotton. In , Ostrovsky exposed the use of North Koreans in work camps in Russia for BBC Newsnight , and linked their operations to the Russian Timber Group, a company owned and operated by the wealthy British Hambro family, which was paying the North Korean regime to use its workers in Russia.
