Present in both the animal kingdom and human society, a social hierarchy is the arrangement of individuals into a social ladder. In humans, this falls along lines of a person's gender, race and economic means. How Social Hierarchies Work Social hierarchies divide the people in a region or country into different groups according to their social standing, wealth, race, education level and their occupations, among other criteria. In the United States, society is divided into six different classes according to a person's wealth: capitalistic, upper middle, middle, working, working poor and underclass classes. The capitalistic class is comprised of the leaders of industry, real estate moguls and stock brokers. The top executives at many companies and organizations also help make up this class.

A society can be defined as a group of people who are directly or indirectly dependent on each other for their needs. A large number of people are accumulated in a society but not all people do the same thing or perform the same job for their livelihood. There are different classes of people in the society depending on their economic status, educational status, racial status etc. Our main aim in this particular article is not to divide the society or create conflict by differentiating between the various classes but only to discuss the nomenclature of the classes that are prevalent in our society broadly known as social class hierarchy. After all, we are all human beings and the classes matter the least in forming the relationships between the human beings. There are various factors, depending on which the social structure is divided into various classes in different ways.

Social stratification is a kind of social differentiation whereby members of society are grouped into socioeconomic strata, based upon their occupation and income , wealth and social status , or derived power social and political. As such, stratification is the relative social position of persons within a social group, category, geographic region, or social unit.

Powell ranks with Patrick Smith in the hierarchy of Florida historical novelists and that is lofty territory, indeed. In the hierarchy of medical issues that carry stigma and fear, HPV has a unique place. They have a schematic representation of the world, reduced to a hierarchy of general ideas, noted by symbols. The lamas—that is, the hierarchy —were losing their hold on the people. And yet the hierarchy managed to maintain its assumptions and to overwhelm all remedial attempts.

Breed, Michael D. Last reviewed: A fundamental aspect of social organization that is established by fighting or display behavior and results in a ranking of the animals in a group. Social, or dominance, hierarchies are observed in many different animals, including insects, crustaceans, mammals, and birds. In many species, size, age, or sex determines dominance rank. Dominance hierarchies often determine first or best access to food, social interactions, or mating within animal groups.
