Imagine France canceling Bastille Day. Or America demoting the Fourth of July and celebrating British monarchs instead. National holidays tell a story of a nation. A fine book It is a dizzying tale and Service tells it well; he has none of the ideological baggage that has so often bedeviled Western histories of Russia A balanced, dispassionate and painstaking account. MartinEdasi May 14, I'm normally a very quick reader if I have nothing else to do I can finish a whole book in less than two days but this book took me over a week to read! This isn't a criticism, in fact it bears testimony to how comprehensive the book is, at least with regards to the post-Tsarist regime. It was a good introduction to Russian history, but I kind of wish I had known about the conditions under tsarism before I started it. The title is a little misleading in this sense because tsarism is only mentioned very briefly, at a point where it is already on the verge of collapsing, and the actual misfortunes suffered by the Russian people under Tsar Nicholas aren't described - we are simply told that people weren't happy.

Russia had an extraordinary twentieth century, undergoing upheaval and transformation. Updating his acclaimed History of Twentieth-Century Russia through , Robert Service provides a panoramic perspective on a country whose Soviet past encompassed revolution, civil war, mass terror, and two world wars. He shows how seven decades of communist rule, which penetrated every aspect of Soviet life, continue to influence Russia today. This new edition also discusses continuing economic and social difficulties at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the military campaign in Chechnya, and Russia's reduced role on the world stage. From the Bolshevik revolution in to the collapse of communism in , from Lenin to Yeltsin, the history of Russia in the 20th century is a complex, tumultuous story of social, geographic, and political upheaval.
