Better Call Saul was supposed to be a romp. Katz inspired version of a Saul-focused spinoff never came to fruition, Better Call Saul still typically has a somewhat sunny disposition, at least compared to its parent series Breaking Bad. Chuck is dead and this episode is almost quiet enough to serve as a moment of silence for his memory. Every season begins with a check-in with Gene, but here things seem much more troubling. After passing out at work, Gene has a scare first at the hospital when a nurse mistakenly enters his social security number incorrectly, then when a cab driver with an Albuquerque signifier stares at him in the rearview mirror just a bit too intensely. Both moments cause Gene to almost hyperventilate. Jimmy remains stoic and withdrawn, and Kim stays reserved while she waits for him to process things.
After more than a year off, we rejoin the sun-baked world of our favorite unemployed attorney and the colorful assortment of miscreants, senior citizens and white collar lawyers in his orbit. Season 3 ended in June , but perhaps you noticed: The clock in the world of the show has hardly ticked a beat. Chuck Michael McKean has just committed suicide by lantern, burning up himself, his house and presumably any trace of those pesky electrical currents that drove him insane. Hector Salamanca Mark Margolis has just had an stroke, provoked by orders from his Mexican overlords that his drugs must be shipped by his hated rival, Gus Fring Giancarlo Esposito. So in many ways, this is an aftermath episode. Instead of unspooling lots of new strands, old ones are tied up.
As always, the show opens in monochrome, and in Omaha. Get a lawyer! This song may not be specifically written about a man trying to reconcile three different identities, but it sure captures those stresses, which all come home to roost as Jimmy is released from the hospital. The driver stares into the rearview, looking at Jimmy with… fatigue? Bits of burning CGI ash float across the screen, dancing over scenes from the quiet apartment where Jimmy and Kim are still asleep. And while every episode of Better Call Saul invites this kind of guessing game is this the moment when Jimmy truly becomes Saul? This one?
Aug 6, Better Call Saul Season 4 Episode 1, "Smoke," doesn't feature fireworks, but does deliver a few gut punches. [Spoilers].

Jimmy McGill is reeling from tragedy as Season 4 of Better Call Saul opens… but has the last thread of pre-Saul Goodman decency within him already snapped? Last we saw Gene, he was passed out on the floor, and here, we see paramedics revive him and take him to the hospital. The computer keeps kicking his information back, she says, and Gene starts to sweat as he gives her an obviously phony social security number. He rushes out of there and into a taxi… but the cab has an Albuquerque Isotopes air freshener, and the driver is eyeing him intensely. A hired thug who knows his true identity? He throws some cash at the guy and ditches the cab to walk home — and his heart rate is back up again.

Better Call Saul Season 4 Episode 1 Review: Smoke
The last time we saw Jimmy McGill, he had one last falling out with his older brother, Chuck, before finding some semblance of peace with his girlfriend, Kim Wexler. Shortly thereafter, Chuck committed suicide by breaking a lantern in his home and letting himself be engulfed by the flames. Way back at the beginning of season 3, it looked like Gene had either suffered a nervous breakdown or a heart attack. The good news is that Gene was physically fine, even though his every waking moment was still filled with fear that his identity would be uncovered. Once again, Mike was practically off in his own world for his part of the show. Believe it or not, this was the lighthearted part of the episode, as Mike refused to simply take the laundered money from Madrigal. Not even Kim could cheer him up.
The Better Call Saul season four premiere started off with the familiar black-and-white Cinnabon Gene sequence that fans have come to look forward to. He's rushed to hospital where multiple tests are performed only to be told by a cheerful young doctor that there is nothing wrong. A tense moment when the fake number is rejected before the receptionist declares it was her mistake for typing the letter O instead of zero. The taxi waiting for him then sends fear throughout by Gene and the viewer as the silently ominous driver has an Albuquerque air freshener. Gene exits the car but the driver remains eerily quiet, giving him an unflinching stare through the review mirror. Kim is still battered from her car accident and Jimmy lovingly cares for her despite her resistance.
