The Inner Planets of Our Solar System
Answer to Name Date Class SECTION The Inner Planets Understanding Main Ideas Label the diagram with the names of the inner pla.with
In our Solar System, astronomers often divide the planets into two groups — the inner planets and the outer planets. The inner planets are closer to the Sun and are smaller and rockier. The outer planets are further away, larger and made up mostly of gas. The inner planets in order of distance from the sun, closest to furthest are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. After an asteroid belt comes the outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Our Solar System is an immense and amazing place. Between its eight planets, moons, 5 dwarf planets possibly hundreds more , , known asteroids, and 3, known comets, it has wonders to sate the most demanding of curiosities. Our Solar System is made up of different regions, which are delineated based on their distance from the Sun, but also the types of planets and bodies that can be found within them. In addition to their proximity, these planets have a number of key differences that set them apart from planets elsewhere in the Solar System. For starters, the inner planets are rocky and terrestrial, composed mostly of silicates and metals, whereas the outer planets are gas giants.
The four inner planets are called terrestrial planets because their surfaces are solid (and, as the name implies, somewhat similar to Earth.

You will find a lot of work on planets, the sun and our moon Luna. As the sheets progress we look at space exploration. As the moon orbits around the Earth, we see a different side of the moon. As shown in the diagram below, sometimes we see the lit side and sometimes the dark side. Provide the names for the phases drawn in the 8 boxes below using the names listed in the following table.
Our solar system consists of the sun, eight planets, moons, many dwarf planets or plutoids , an asteroid belt, comets, meteors, and others. The sun is the center of our solar system ; the planets, their moons, a belt of asteroids , comets , and other rocks and gas orbit the sun. Another large body is Pluto , now classified as a dwarf planet or plutoid. A belt of asteroids minor planets made of rock and metal lies between Mars and Jupiter. The largest planet is Jupiter. Jupiter is so big that all the other planets could fit inside it.
